Change in GRE from 2011

Google Buzz
The GRE is under construction, with its revamped test ready for future grad and MBA students in August or September of 2011, says Inside Higher Ed.
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has had test-altering plans since 2005 but the 2007 launch was delayed due to technical difficulties.
Although the exam will still include sections on verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing, each section is being revised. The new verbal section, for example, will eliminate questions on antonyms and analogies. On the quantitative section, the biggest change will be the addition of an online calculator. The writing section will still have two parts, one asking for a logical analysis and the other seeking an expression of the student’s own views.
The changes are meant to increase the GRE’s competitive edge when up against the GMAT, the test of choice for most MBA prospects. The GRE is a viable option for some B-school admission requirements and the ETS would like to see that option more widely taken advantage of, reports the New York Times, who also picked up this story.
Some of the specific changes to the GRE include:
The grading scale will range from 130 to 170, rather than from the current 200 to 800.
The test will be lengthened from 3 hours to 3.5 hours.
The order of test questions will be scrambled every 2 hours, for increased security.
The test will allow for test-takers to skip a question and return to it later.
The verbal section will no longer contain questions on analogies and antonyms.
A calculator will be provided so that mathematics answers will be based on test-takers’ comprehension of concepts and not their speed at basic calculations.
The time of the exam will increase from around 3 hours to 3 hours, 45 minutes.
The quantitative section will now provide an online calculator. Also its geometry component will be cut down and data analysis questions will be added.
The first point, of the deflated grading scale, will be to the test-takers advantage, says David Payne, VP and COO of ETS. With the current, larger range, he explains, a 10 point difference is seen as a major setback for the lower scoring test. The new system, however, will condense those 10 points into just 1 or 2, showing the more accurate representation of the significance (or lack thereof) of such a difference.
The ability to skip around from question to question within each section, he continues to explain, is meant to make the test-taking experience more natural and more comfortable.
Payne also describes a non-cognitive optional addition to the GRE, the Personal Potential Index, in which applicants are able to showcase more of their humanity, personality, and interests.
In short, says Payne, the new GRE will be “much friendlier.”
One more thing regarding the GRE-GMAT debate: Not all B-schools accept the GRE as of now, but student experience shows, according to Inside Higher Ed, that the GMAT’s math section is more challenging than that of the GRE. MBA-bound students who have strong verbal skills, therefore, are starting to lean towards the GRE—that is, if their business school of choice accepts it.

In new GRE you can repeat only once in 60 days.

As ETS is going to implement new changes starting from Aug. 1, 2011, aims to serve as a better indicator of graduate school readiness. The maker of the GRE, the Educational Testing Service, will implement a wide array of changes that they hope will accomplish this goal.

In new test there will be no questions from Antonym & Analogy. Due to this reason vocaubulary will not play a major role. These are the biggest changes in the history of the GRE. Exam scores will be shifted to a 130-to-170-point scoring system in one-point increments, a change from the current 200-to-800 scale in 10-point increments. The new scoring system is designed to highlight larger discrepancies in scores in order to match them more accurately with percentiles.

The grading for the analytical writing section will remain unchanged. Scores range from zero-to-six. In the current version of the GRE, a perfect 800 on the math section equates to only the 94th percentile. The new GRE will be a multistage test, and correct answers in a given section will lead to harder questions and a higher scoring band and incorrect answers will have the opposite effect.

The user interface of the test will also be getting an updated look. A new built-in calculator function of the exam, while potentially helpful for test-takers, might also signify a more challenging math section. The essay portion of the test will be reduced from 45 to 30 minutes in length, and the prompts will be more focused, making it harder to prepare for the writing portion in advance. Students will also see a change in the frequency with which they are able to re-take the GRE, decreasing from the current once every 30 days to only once every 60 days.

Students who take the current GRE receive their scores on the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections almost immediately. While the Educational Testing Service collects enough data to set up scoring for the new test, there will be a delay in score reporting of about two months.

As a result, students who take the revised test in August may not receive their scores until November or December, so those who plan to apply to graduate schools in the fall will need to take the GRE before the new test takes effect so they don’t miss application deadlines.
