D-selfish
stalwart means showing loyality for allegiance
but as paradox means self contradicting
the answer should be opposite

selfish is the answer because as altruisim means unselfishness in the welfare of others and it leads to selfishness only when it is concerned with one’s own relatives

I think it will be B ) beneficent , coz if you read the sentence without the word paradox, the remaining sentence also tells us something that altruism does not really stand for which is highlighted by use of ” in fact” . Altruism is where you do something selflessly, without expecting any returns or benefits.Altruism may be beneficent if it aids only close relatives and this a paradox as stated in the first word of the sentence.

Yea it was D , GRE don’t want extreme creativity ….it was as simple as it is.. ” ……. only own’s relatives ” was wholly giving the feel of sentence
