Identify keywords in the sentence: “complex” and “meager.” These words indicate archaeologists have trouble piecing together a picture of complex societies because the limited evidence they have is incomplete and not in complete context. Therefore, the best choice to complete the sentence would be “intricacies” (complex society has these) and “equivocal” (because the meager evidence could be refuted by evidence found subsequent to one archaeologist’s analysis).
