(A). The phrase “detachment from the surrounding world” infers that by sleeping, one is leaving the surrounding world and into another. The word closest to “world” would be REALM – a domain or sphere.

probable ans are either A or D.

but “a_______ whose rhythm is as unique and as consistent as a signature.” the presence of “rhythm” in the last phrase suggest me to go for D.

i will go with D progression .
Concentrate on “degrees of detachment from the surrounding world”
so it has to be changing or progressing state whose rhythm is unique .
I think progression fits best here
