Explanation goes like this:

240 is his body weight , so 1/2 ounce per body weight amounts to 120..

apart from it his intake should be 8 ounces for every 25 pounds..Let it be ‘x’

prescribed intake is 120+x=136

x=16

8 ounces for 25 pounds

so 26 ounces for 50 pounds

Therefore he weighs extra by 50 pounds!

well i tried this way,

let suposse,

a = ideal weight
e = extra weight

then,
from second statement ,

a + e = 240 ——(i)

from first statement

a/2 + 8 * e/25 = 136 ——(ii)

but solving results in -ve ?? and also too complex

according to your assumption ‘a’ is not ideal weight rather actual weight …

“1/2 ounce per pound of body weight” and not “1/2 ounce per pound of ideal weight”

so ‘a’ is 240

so
a/2 + 8 * e/25 = 136

240/2 +8 * e/25 = 136

120+8 * e/25 = 136

8 * e/25 = 16

e =16*25/8

e=50

‘e’ is nothing but the extra weight

its d 50
reason
since weight given is 240 pound and we have 136 ounces of water prescribed by the doctor so

since 2 ounce for each pound of body weight hence 120 ounce water which left us (136-120=) 16 ounces which acounts for 50 pound extra weight according to question
