Last year Mrs. Long received $160 in dividends on her shares of Company X stock, all of which she had held for the entire year. If she had had 12 more shares of the stock last year, she would have received $15 more in total annual dividends. How many shares of the stock did she have last year?

two equations:
x=no. of shares
y=value per share
x*y = 160
(x+12)*y=175

it is A, but here is (what I think) an easier solution.

Since 12 more shares would give $15 more in dividends,
one share pays off (15/12) = $1.25

Thus, $160 is paid off from (160/1.25) = 128 shares

the answer is 128
let the number of shares be x..160 corresponds to x..and 175 corresponds to x+12..so we get the equation x+12=175*x/160 and hence x =128

divident per share = 15/12 (15dollars for 12 more shares)

160 / x = 15 / 12

looking at the numbers, x has to be a little more than 120..
(a) is the answer
